Database Design

A badly designed database can operate inefficiently, make accessing data more difficult than it needs to be, and will add unnecessary complexity to software which needs to access it. Much time can be lost trying to code around deficiencies in database design, and ongoing maintenance can be a major headache. You might even discover that your database has you "painted into a corner" which will prevent you from developing your website or application further in the direction it needs to go.

A good database is designed from the initial stages with the problem it is to solve kept clearly in mind. Consistent naming schemes, normalisation and choice of indexes are just the start; you also need to consider what areas of the database are likely to get the most use, both from an enquiry and updating point of view.
